Land Roverâs pioneering 4x4 technology All-Terrain Progress Control enables steady, composed progress across any terrain at the push of a button. Select the mode to suit the surface and enjoy the assured performance. Watch the Range Rover Evoque Convertible putting its all-terrain capability to the test. DRIVING THROUGH MUD Engage Mud and Ruts on Terrain Response. Try to stay within existing tracks. Keep the wheels straight and use the information screen to guide you. DRIVING ON SAND Engage Sand on Terrain Response. The key to crossing sand is to know how firm the surface is. You need to maintain momentum to drive over the sand, not sink into it. DRIVING THROUGH WATER Try to work out how deep the water is. In static, shallower water, explore on foot and use a stick to gauge the depth - or watch another vehicle go through. DRIVING ON HILLS Going uphill, approach the hill straight on and use the highest gear possible. Never turn the vehicle on a steep slope. Going downhill, engage Hill Descent Control. DRIVING ON ROCKS Before crossing rocks and scree, get out of your vehicle and assess the risks. Select Rock Crawl on Terrain Response; this will engage low-range gears. DRIVING ON GRAVEL Engage Grass/Gravel/Snow on Terrain Response. Gravel is a constantly changing, low-grip surface, so always drive at a slow speed. Land Rover Discoveryâs are well known for their Air Suspension which works with the Land Rover Self Leveling Suspension (SLS) system. Love it or hate it, if you have air suspension you will want to know how to use it. Controls for Air Suspension and Next Generation Driver White Land Rover Image with Arrow Up: is the suspension Lift button Yellow Oval with Red Land Rover: is the Hill Descent Control (HDC) button Vehicle Key / Remote Fob / PLIP: your PLIP may have a suspension lowering button Land Rover Discovery 2 Air Suspension Land Rover Air Suspension consists of two Air Bags (balloons), one at each rear wheel. There are no Air Bags at the front. The vehicle dashboard buttons can raise the Air Bags for off-road ground clearance and lower them back to normal driving height. The dashboard buttons cannot lower the Air Bags, this can only be done if you have a PLIP with the suspension lowering button. These can be purchased if you do not own one. You may want to lower your suspension for attaching a hitch, boat, trailer, etc and in some off-roading conditions. How to Engage Air Suspension This feature will only work if the doors are closed. If your vehicle has air suspension you can press the white âLiftâ button under the yellow HDC button and this will raise the rear of the vehicle circa 4 inches (100mm). A warning light will appear on the dash panel and flash until it is at full height. Be aware as the rear rises, the front will lower. Press âLiftâ button again and it will lower. If you also have the âPLIPâ set up you can also lower the suspension by the same amount at the rear, if you do the front goes up slightly. Reset to normal when finished. Let the vehicle raise and lower and you will be good to drive! If you air suspension has failed and you are looking into other options check out Off-Road Discoveryâs Suspension - Out with the Air and in with the Coils article. If your air suspension works well for you it is recommended to change them about every 5 years. We decided to give our Land Rover Discovery extra protection with custom made skid plates. While off-roading we have had tree logs barely miss puncturing our gas tank and rocks dent our transmission pan. It was time to better protect ourselves while adventuring and when we often only have ourselves to rely on. Checking Out the New Custom Skid Plates at the Shop We decided to get our skid plates custom made vs ordering and shipping them from the few companies that make them. We decided to go this route since shipping is a pain and the Canadian dollar is weak. But our customization choice largely came from seeing a local automotive shop ownerâs off-road buggy that he made and we were impressed by his metal skills. The Custom Built Off-Road Buggy That Wowed Us Why did we install skid plates? If you value your transmission, steering system, fuel tank and transfer case and go off-roading to any serious extent you may want to consider protecting the underside of your vehicle. We had 3 plates installed this round by Pro-Active Automotive in Calgary, Alberta Canada. We had previously ordered and installed a Terrafirma fuel guard we purchased a from another local shop, TRS. Custom Skid Plates for our Land Rover Discovery Front Steering Guard Skid Plate The front steering guard skid plate was created from a slightly scratched piece of aluminium. Instead of it having a few scratches, which we wouldnât have minded since itâs going to get scratched up anyways, Dean from Pro-Active gave it a nice design for eye appeal. One nicely designed feature of these skid plates are the attachment nuts. They are welded to the frame mounts so there are no free floating nuts to mess around with while attaching the bolts to the underside. The plates are easy to remove by one person if required. Custom Made Front Steering Guard Skid Plate Transmission Skid Plate Another great feature designed into the skid plates was cutting holes to help prevent the exhaust from cooking the underside of the vehicle. Transmission Skid Plate Since we have an irreparable transfer case leak due to the systemic ovaling of the case around the intermediate shaft which if kept topped up with fluid hasnât seemed to cause any issues other than a oil puddle in the garage we decided to have an absorbent pad placed under the transfer case between the skid plate. This keeps things clean and stops foul smells from oils getting onto exhaust and burning on startup. The Absorbent Pad, Which We Dubbed The Pillow Solution Transfer Case Skid Plate Under Armor Installed! Terrafirma Fuel Guard (self installed) Terrafirma Fuel Guard Fresh Out of the Box The Fuel Guard didnât line up with our bolts as required so we had to widen the bolt holes to make it fit. Our Land Rover Discoveryâs original skid plate is next to the new in this photo. It is significantly narrower and ours had rusted out holes where it should be protecting. Our kids love being involved in any vehicle modification - their own tools and a piece of wood makes great entertainment. Drilling Out the Bolt Holes Terrafirma Fuel Guard Installed Good luck on your journey of installing skid plates, happy adventures and reach out if you have any questions.
